House of Reps Advances Bill to Increase Lagos Local Governments to 57

On Wednesday, March 27, the House of Representatives passed for a second reading a bill seeking to recognise Lagos State’s 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) as fully recognised Local Government Areas (LGAs).

If approved, Lagos will have 57 LGAs instead of 20, raising the national total from 774 to 811. The LCDAs were originally created by President Bola Tinubu during his tenure as Lagos governor (1999–2007), a move that led to a dispute with then-President Olusegun Obasanjo.

Sponsored by Abiodun Faleke and 21 other lawmakers, the bill proposes constitutional amendments to formally integrate the 37 LCDAs into Nigeria’s recognised LGAs. The legislative process is ongoing.
