Labour unions in Rivers State have strongly opposed the recent declaration of a state of emergency, warning that it could destabilise the region’s economy and lead to nationwide protests if not overturned.
In a statement signed by leaders of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC), and Joint Negotiation Council (JNC), the unions criticised the removal of Governor Siminalayi Fubara and other elected officials, calling it undemocratic. They argued that such actions undermine the people’s electoral choices and set a dangerous precedent for governance.
The unions expressed concern over the financial strain on workers, particularly local government employees, who have reportedly faced salary delays due to the crisis. They also pointed out that political instability has deterred investors, potentially harming Rivers State’s internally generated revenue and economic growth.
While acknowledging the importance of maintaining order, the labour groups insisted that governance must align with constitutional principles. They urged the federal government to prioritise dialogue over political maneuvers and reinstate the suspended officials.
Warning of further action, the unions stated that they would mobilise workers across the country if their demands were ignored, emphasising that economic activities nationwide could be affected.
