The Presidential Enabling Business Environment Council (PEBEC) has reassured stakeholders following the Federal Government’s decision to discontinue Nigeria’s visa-on-arrival (VOA) policy.

Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, recently announced plans to scrap the policy, citing security concerns and the need for a more structured immigration process.

In response, PEBEC’s Director-General, Zahrah Audu, emphasised that discussions are ongoing to find a balanced solution that enhances security without hindering investment and tourism.

“We acknowledge the concerns raised by the international community and want to assure everyone that we are actively engaging with the Minister of Interior to find a way forward,” Audu stated on Monday.

She reiterated that while security remains a priority, the VOA policy has played a crucial role in facilitating business, tourism, and trade.

“Our goal is to strengthen security measures around the VOA process while preserving its benefits,” she added.

Audu reaffirmed PEBEC’s commitment to improving Nigeria’s business environment by reducing bureaucratic obstacles and streamlining processes. She urged stakeholders to remain patient as efforts continue to address the situation.

Meanwhile, Tunji-Ojo defended the policy shift, arguing that effective border control requires a more structured approach. “Security is not an area where you can afford to be 99.9 percent correct—you must be 100 percent,” he stated.

The minister also announced the introduction of a digital landing and exit card system, replacing the current manual process. “This is 2025, not 1825. Technology must take its place,” he asserted.

As discussions continue, PEBEC remains focused on ensuring that Nigeria remains a welcoming destination for investors and visitors alike.
