President Bola Tinubu has stepped in to settle the leadership crisis in the Lagos State House of Assembly, securing Mudashiru Obasa’s position as Speaker despite previous efforts to replace him.

The dispute, which had divided lawmakers, was addressed during a closed-door meeting at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. Tinubu urged all members to move forward with Obasa as Speaker, overriding an earlier recommendation that he step down.

Obasa’s leadership had been contested following allegations of financial mismanagement and authoritarian rule, leading to his removal by a majority of lawmakers earlier in the year. However, his return to office under a negotiated agreement was expected to be temporary. Instead, he held onto power, prompting fresh concerns among stakeholders.

With Tinubu’s backing, the crisis appears to have been defused, with lawmakers agreeing to cooperate. Additionally, Obasa has been asked to drop legal action related to his impeachment, as part of efforts to restore order within the Assembly.

While some stakeholders remain dissatisfied with the handling of the crisis, Tinubu has assured that all concerns will be addressed to maintain political stability in Lagos.
